oh daisy

so in the mood of films and costumes let's go back to my beloved 'great gatsby'. since writing about it last time i saw it once more, this time in 2d. well... it doesn't feel as spectacular as in 3d (you know it was filmed to be in 3d so that's understandable).
oh and there are some elements that are just too much, all that 'green screen' stuff and dreams literally appearing in the clouds was an absurd. in 2d that's much more visible.

but going away from the general idea, let's discuss daisy buchanan, portrayed by carey mulligan.

as you can see perfectly well even from the posters she's the 'it' girl in this film. i mean, it's pretty obvious, especially if you know the story. and all this 'itness' is shown in her costumes. she's in general a brilliant example of how diverse the 20's really were. hearing 'the roaring twentees' always reminded me of low waist and brilliant head pieces. but when i looked into it more while reading the book and as a preparation for my english classes, i discovered how much more there was to the fashion of that time.

it turns out that people were so amazed by the golden years and the boom, american dream was coming alive, that clothing exploded with many new styles. the dropped waist was definitely a trend but the a shaped dresses were also very big. the evening clothing became very luxurious, with fur and crystals in details. i think that as women in general became more significant in the life of a society, they sort of became more like men (you can see that very clearly from the career of a short haircut at that time), but the again i think that they didn't want to lose themselves in all that 'freedom'.

let's go back to daisy. oh sweet sweet daisy.

i think that a lot of people will disagree with me but my favourite dress of hers wasn't actually the party dress, filled with crystals, but the lavender day-time dress she wore when she was reunited with gatsby.

the lace shows just as much as it should and the frilly arm pieces are very fashionable for that time, you know the whole extenuating your arms thing. her hair is also very nice in that scene, let me just throw that out there. also the significance of the muted violet is very big, she sort of goes through a drastic change right there and then.

and now the star of her wear, the party dress. this is actually an old prada design, the 'chandelier dress' from the spring/summer 2010 collection. it looks really cool in the party sequence, the light bounces of the crystals in a very pretty sort of rainbowy way but not really. i mean, just pay attention to it.

the last thing i need to talk about are the headpieces. as you probably know, hair accessories were very in back then and it definitely shows in the costumes. in almost every scene women have something on their head, either a hat, a little pin or a scarf like daisy is rocking below.

i don't really have a lot to say about these. as a person in love with her bowler hats and any other headpieces, i just think that this style can compliment a lot of faces and looks. just try a hat for a change, i feel like not enough girls (or even guys for that matter) pay attention to headdress and many possibilities a hat gives.

hope you enjoyed that,
let me know what you think about daisy's wardrobe.

next up:
i went on sales

movie night (month?)

i've been watching a lot of films lately. i mean loads.
it started with an obsession over jesse eisenberg. i know. not your usual hottie but i find myself attracted to these kinds of guys. like he's just nice and seems like a shy but passionate fast talker (i guess my 'type'). so i watched 'now you see me' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1670345/) like 5 times in 2 weeks (i know i'm crazy, but i also have a nice and cheap cinema near me and know my discounts). it's not great, i mean it's an action thriller about criminal magicians, pretty interesting concept. i found that it took my mind off a lot of things and jesse is amazingly hot with a stubble and a deck of cards.

sidenote: for some reason i kinda feel dirty posting this. i'm so twisted.
it's like confessions or something.
i hope he never finds this...
sorry, i'm just weird.
carry on.

then my next encounter with his acting was in re-watching 'the social network' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1285016/) for this first scene in the pub. wonderful, everybody should watch that. it has a really interesting way of showing the story of friendship and creating the biggest social network in the background. oh yeah, facebook.

to my surprise i got so obsessed with jesse that i watched my first zombie movie just to see him and woody harrelson in their first piece together (they are both in 'now you see me'). and it was a good choice. and to throw my 'fashion' opinion, the makeup was brilliant, a little over the top but very appropriate for the atmosphere of the film. i forgot to mention it's 'zombieland' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1156398/), i also stars emma stone!

then came 30 minutes or less (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1622547/), adventureland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091722/) (kristen stewart isn't actually that bad here, don't throw things at me! just watch it!) and some other ones.

then i discovered 'the living wake' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489212/), a wonderful story.

and the best costumes ever. i might do a review of this and the costume part in a separate post. btw would you like to hear my thoughts on films in general or just the costumes? i mean like an additional corner for movie geeks that like the sort of suff i watch (and believe me, i watch some weird pieces sometimes).

ok. i just added photos and i guess it turned out to be a 'jesse eisenberg appreciation post'. meh, i'm fine with that.

i provided the imdb pages to all those films, in case you'd like to read more. they're not just some random pages ;]

so let me know what you think about 'the film corner with a crazy person that just enjoys going to the cinema' (that's just a draft title, don't worry, the real one is going to be much more ridiculous) and go watch all or at least a few of those pieces.

we good?
good.

love you all and see you soon,

qofr

p.s. not my images, obvs.

the postman

ok. i'm sorry. but now i'm on holiday so it's all good. and i hope i won't procrastinate on this. cause i'm a shitty bloger. are we done here? good.

hi. again. hi.

so... as a starter let me just throw words at you. you ok with that? might be painful, you know, all those comas stuck in your skin, sharp ends of w's and t's. only o's are nice, bouncy little o's.

i'm feeling much better, for all of those of you who care.

i missed my anniversary. again, just like last year. don't worry, the new layout will be done till the end of july, it's the best one yet.

plus things.

i'm going to an arts school in september. today was a shopping day. i went with my sister and it was... scary. i mean... i don't know all the terms, i have no idea how much of what i need to get or how to ask for that. that's where my anxiety kicks in and i'm just paralised. so i just got the basics. i'll probably have to go back there. on my own... oh my god...

this makes me nervous about next year. and i don't know how to paint or draw, when you think about it. i mean... drawing is my thing, but it's not very good and i'm hopeless with any other paints than watercolours. disaster is in the making. me in an arts school doing characterisation and styling. wonderful. i shall document me falling into a pit off eternal despair by the end of the summer, expect some intense footage.

other stuff.

i've been obsessed with mail lately. i mean the real snail-mail thing. if you follow me on instagram or twitter you probably know that but now i'm telling you for sure. actually, through instagram i discovered a wonderful mail-art artist. she's russian, and unfortunately i can't read cyrylic but her art is amazing.
her blog:
http://www.fishmailart.com/
and her instagram:
http://instagram.com/nasyakopteva

so for now your task is to get mailing. i can even offer you a deal that if you email me (or like send any other way) your address i'll make something fun for you and we can become pen-palls, isn't that cool? no, only me?

if you are interested, here is a cool site:

crying heart

there are some songs that always make me cry, no matter what. one of them is people help the people by birdy. i know it by heart, and every word feels like it's written on it with a sharp pen, like in harry potter. i hum the words along the song whenever it plays. i try to practise feeling emotions, i know it sounds weird but bear with me. so i cry a little everywhere cause my shuffle is heartless.
the other one is żwir by maria peszek. she's a polish artist so the very meaningful words are not understandable to everyone, just so you know. the music itself is also very moving. recently it became one of my anthems, i don't feel alright.
but the fact that this makes me feel sad so much and every time makes me calm. you know, that one thing that stays. and this makes me happy. the fact that i can have that. just a monday night reflection.

in other news. i'm designing a new layout, it deserves a revamp. i just can't decide on the font on the banner yet. any suggestions? oh and i'm writing the other posts for gatsby, let's hope i'll finish them soon.

oh and do you like snail mail? pen pals, mail art and such?

love,

qofr

23.5.13

the great gatsby

so let's begin.
i had this promise i'll read the book first. i mean the original. i fail at that a lot of the time (cloud atlas, the hobbit and almost any film i saw based on a book). but now i was very set on the idea and did it. kinda. i read it the day it came out here, loved the book. even though it was kind of dragging sometimes, especially in the end, i really liked it. i liked it so much i even started reading a story about zelda fitzgerald, scott's wife, who inspired him. i mean not for this book (although i think that their story is a bit similar to daisy and jay's) but in general and later. anyway... where was i...
oh yeah...

the story
i hope you sort of know what's going on there, if not there are better sources for that then me (and i recommend the book, it's only like 200 pages long). i don't know, google it. i can give you just a very brief concept.
so there's this guy, nick carroway. he moves to the long island, his neighbour is jay gatsby. nick has a cousin, daisy. she was in love with jay but married another guy, tom. so they all live there and jay wants to renew his relationship with daisy. meanwhile tom has a romance with a married woman. story continues, bunch of things happen. we know the story from nick's point of view, it's like he's the writer. jay is madly in love with daisy, he wants her to leave tom and come live with him, get married in her hometown blah blah blah. to impress her he throws these famous big parties in his house. they're spectacular, especially in the film.
spoiler alert!
jay eventually dies, nobody comes to his funeral, turns out jay was only posing as this rich man, nick is depressed. daisy stays with tom, his romance ends tragically.
spoiler alert over!

the book is very thoughtful and gives a fresh perspective on some things, especially the classics in general, at least from me. i was sort of tired of all these good endings and 'and they lived happily ever after' which happens in most modern books, at least in those that i read.

anyway, the 'book side' of this is maybe for another time.
let's talk costume!
(as i think of it now, i'll probably do a series, this is real and to long for a one post. i'm thinking gatsby, tom, nick one post, daisy one and the rest one. good?)

the costumes in general were designed by catherine martin, baz luhrmann's wife and a great production designer. she won two oscars for moulin rouge, one of the most beautiful films (in the visual sense) i have ever seen. she collaborated with miuccia prada, making 40 pieces from her past collections into more roaring twenties looks.

i love the twenties in general, want to know why? let me know!

till next time (probably this week)

love,

qofr

oh my god. it happened again. no, not the hangover version but my one.
i'm the worst blogger i know, granted i don't know many but still the crown of procrastination goes to my lazy head.
if it makes you feel any better i failed a lot of things not only posting on my blog 'regularly'. time just fly's so fast!

this time i won't promise i'll be better. cause i fail a lot.
this time i'm just gonna do it.

burgundy and burgundy

i kinda liked the last haul. so i'm doing another one :)
you may have seen a sign for this post on my instagram.

i finally tried asos!
i've been visiting them for some time now, but never got around to ordering anything. plus i didn't really know how was the shipping time and other stuff. but my sister, tsutsanka, sort of convinced me to try.
so i did.

and i'm quite pleased, especially by the delivery time. it was before the estimated date, only 1 and a half week of waiting.

i ordered two things.

a midi long-sleeve jersey dress in a really deep burgundy.

and a long-sleeve shirt with some interesting detailing near the collar.
it is a bit more grey than on the website but still looks pretty flawless. the panels are a light burgundy and a deeper shade of sort-of red.

this weird thing on the right side is actually a pocket! it was a really nice surprise, a new thing for me (that kind of shape for a pocket).
btw i adore these buttons, so cute!

so, asos good job :)

in other news. i watched the spring breakers the other night. do you want to know my thoughts on that or should i just stop?

love,

qofr

crochet and polka dots

soo... as a warm-up for the future...

i have a very small haul for you.
a thing i've never done here, ever. but i just wanted to ok? like something new.

so, today was the day. it finally got warmer than 2 degrees and i started thinking about spring. my most recent obsession and pretty much a must-have for any season are collar, especially shirts and dresses. i adore the look of those with my uber present sweaters and zipped hoodies. the only problem is that when you have a long sleeve shirt and a hoodie and it start to get warm, it's just not pretty.

now thanks to the wonderful h&m i found a perfect solution - no sleeve shirts.
they're just as cool but they keep you cool (see what i did there? :])

yesterday i bought these two, but i plan to search for some other colours and prints cause i absolutely love these.

the first one is cream crochet with some brown buttons
(i must warn you, it's pretty see-through, not everything but the contour shows through.
a flesh coloured lingerie is advised)

the other one is a very pretty plumy colour with cream polka dots scattered all over.
the buttons are sort of a pearly material i guess.

they are now in the l.o.g.g. section in h&m. if you want these, i would advise to go a size higher cause they're a bit tight on the 'lady bits' section.

i'm considering doing a little spring looks series featuring these and many more.
how do you feel about this?

hope you have a wonderful spring,

love,

qofr
